Painting in Tangier
Happy Saturday.
At the end of 2023, I decided to start traveling once a year (solo) to dive deeper into a hobby or an interest. I saw it as continuing education.
I encouraged my wife to do the same, an effort for us both to stay engaged, curious, and inspired as the years pass. Plus, what is hotter than a partner who continues to explore the world, and wants more from each day?
The next spring, I flew to Tangier to attend a painting course for a week. My wife went to a wood-carving course at Penland School of Craft.
I probably could have gone somewhere domestically, but I wanted a little adventure. I figured the other attendees had made the effort to fly to Tangier to paint, too. So even if I didn’t love the class itself, there would be some new and interesting people to talk to. (I was correct.)
It was an incredible trip, impactful in ways I am still discovering. And I am still painting.
During the trip, our host arranged some drivers to take us an hour South of the city, into the magical gardens of Rohuna - the work of writer/designer/horticulturist Umberto Pasti. We ate lunch on the rambling grounds surrounding Umberto’s cottage, nestled in the hillside.
I shared these images on my Instagram yesterday but wanted to include them here for you, my loyal subscribers. I’d never seen anything like this place.
Have a great weekend.
