In last week’s newsletter, I wrote about what we feed our son in hopes that it might stir some ideas for the dinner table of parents out there. Several people contacted me about the “fish drawer,” where we keep a deeply stocked selection of tinned seafood. They wanted to know more!
At mealtime, if we’re short on time, ideas, or patience, we will cobble something together from the produce we have on hand and augment it with a tin of fish. It’s quick, easy, and delicious. And fortunately for us, our son loves it, too.
There are the small, simple things I love. Keeping a well-stocked pantry means that mealtime, often a daily challenge for many parents, busy professionals, or just humans existing in the world, becomes a fraction easier.
That’s a big part of why I write this newsletter: As a non-chef but an avid home cook (who has worked in restaurants my entire life), I’ve picked up a few tricks. I love to share them here. Meals can and should be one of the most joyful parts of the day - an opportunity to commune around the table and break bread together. It may sound sappy or sentimental, but when I reflect on my childhood, the greatest gift I was given was consistent meals around a dinner table with my family.
And now - TINNED FISH: what I stock, what I do with it, and where I get my ideas. I hope you enjoy it.
