Five Easy Pieces: Oct 14, 2022
Every Friday I share a quick hit list of 5 things I’m into. They may be wildly outdated or impossibly current. They may be overexposed and well known, or a hidden gem. If there is a product included, it is never sponsored or paid - this is just stuff I like.
1. Welcome to Wrexham
I love a sports documentary. Recently I’ve been hooked on “Welcome to Wrexham,” a show on FX (and streaming through AppleTV) chronicling the purchase by Ryan Reynolds and Ryan McElhenney of a low level/down on their luck English soccer team. It’s like a real life version of Ted Lasso, and I love following the trials and tribulations as they work to create an organization that might be returned to its glory days.
2. Lord Huron
And their perfect fall track.
3. The best planner
Every year around this time I buy a new planner for the following year. (Let this be your reminder.) I experimented with a variety of options over the years, even wading into the digital space where I believed I could manage my time via Google Calendar. That was a huge mistake - I need to write things down. The act of putting pen to paper makes it more permanent for me, burns it into the page and my mind, making it real. Set in stone.
All that experimentation led me back to the trusty planner I love: the Moleskine Weekly Planner. I’d like to believe I’m a Smythson man, but I can’t quit Molksine. I love it for its utility, reliability, affordability, and all the other -ility’s I’m forgetting.
4. Debbie Meyer’s Green Bags
I don’t know who Debbie Meyer is, but her Green Bags are a game changer. I’m the king of getting excited at the grocery store, returning home with mounds of produce that will often wilt or go grey before I can get to it. My mom introduced me to these bags which keep your fruit and veg fresher, longer. I don’t know what kind of space science is at work here, but these bags are a must for any breathing human. 10/10, co-sign, seal of approval.
5. Kate Berlant
I recently read this article about comedian Kate Berlant, someone I recognized but wasn’t really familiar with. What struck me was the fact that she never writes her material down - each show is effectively improvised. I loved watching her recent special, Cinnamon in the Wind. It was a welcome break from the typical pacing of a comedy special; her freewheeling, loose energy was so much fun to watch.
