I am an unabashed Anglophile, and London is my favorite city in the world. I was engaged there, married just outside of the city, honeymooned there, and returned every summer until our son was born. (And, of course, because COVID.)
I’ve just returned from my first visit in several years, and left the city brimming with energy, enthusiasm, and a load of inspiration. London is incredibly cosmopolitan - it’s neighborhoods brim with art, architecture, food, drink, music, design, style, culture, and people. Yet I find, amongst the action, you can also disappear into little enclaves, tiny villages within a bigger metropolis. The city possesses a scale that suits humans. It feels at once huge and magnetic and frenetic while also managing to feel sweet, calm, and easy.
Writing a “guide” to London is as fraught as writing a guide to any major city. How could one purport to create an essential guide when it is impossible to turn over every stone, or explore every street? Considering that, I can only offer up MY London.
I cannot possibly list all of my favorite spots, so I’ve done my best to highlight the ones I view as essential. I’ve kept my list to 10 locations.
This means I’ve left off some places dear to my heart, but I’m trying to provide a list that is concise and actionable. I’ve kept this entry to dining. Later this week I’ll be sharing an additional filing of my shopping favorites. If you’d like some suggestions about arts and culture, or otherwise - leave me a comment below.
