Listen, if you want to skip all my rambling and just get to it: you should buy this basket.
If you’re patient enough to stick with me while I stitch together a few notions around this basket, then keep reading.
First, I want to say that I never trust any recommendations I read online anymore. It seems like everybody is getting paid to direct you somewhere in the online ecosystem, and honest, judicious product reviews shit the bed the moment “affiliate links” were introduced into the world. I don’t even know how an affiliate link works, and I have zero interest in learning.
I find it much cleaner to charge a few shekels for this newsletter and not be beholden to any brands or sponsorship overlords. That way I can be honest about the things I like or don’t like.
You can help me out with that mission here:
Second, I remember growing up and watching Martha Stewart on television suggest her “good things.” My parents didn’t spring for cable, so I missed out on many of the cultural bedrocks of my peers - I never got any of the references from “Eat My Shorts” or any other Nickelodeon shows being discussed on the playground. For me, I was happy to watch Oprah or Martha Stewart after school. And for whatever reason I always felt like the stuff Martha recommended was on point.
In some ways, her “good things” probably inspired “A Small and Simple Thing.” (That’s the name of this newsletter.)
All that is to say, I’d like to be able to do the same thing for you. Which brings me to the basket.
We have several of these baskets around the house. We use them for toy storage, for folded towels tucked into a cubby in the kitchen, and in our bathroom for dirty laundry. In my opinion they are the ideal laundry bin.
They are made from a sturdy, resilient leather that feels like it’s impossible to damage, and it only gets more handsome with time - as with any great leather!
It’s a good, small and simple thing.
Beautiful basket and a fabulous store. I lived in Westport, CT and it was a favorite store of mine. Lots of beautiful things to love.
